Smartphone Photography Workshops at The Zone Youth Club

In November and December 2024, WO Consultancy collaborated with The Zone Youth Club in Islington to deliver engaging smartphone photography workshops tailored to young participants with varying needs, including Special Educational Needs (SEN). These workshops aimed to foster creativity, enhance visual storytelling, and introduce essential photographic concepts in an accessible and hands-on manner.
Workshop Highlights
Week 1: Foundations of Composition
Participants explored the basics of smartphone photography, focusing on:
Rule of Thirds: Learning how to use gridlines to create balanced and visually engaging images by placing subjects at natural focal points.
Negative Space: Understanding how to use surrounding space effectively to emphasise subjects and create minimalist, striking images.
Practical exercises included activating gridlines on their devices, cleaning lenses for optimal clarity, and taking photos that incorporated these principles.
Week 2: Advanced Techniques
Building on the first week’s lessons, participants delved into:
Framing: Using natural elements (like doors or trees) to create visual borders that guide the viewer’s attention to the subject.
Perspective: Experimenting with angles, such as bird’s-eye or below-eye-level views, to create dynamic and engaging photos.
Activities encouraged creativity and exploration, with participants tasked to combine framing and perspective in their photos.
Impact and Experience
These 2-hour sessions provided a supportive environment for young people to express themselves creatively while developing technical skills. The workshops emphasized inclusivity, catering to diverse learning and behavioral needs, and made photography accessible through the use of smartphones.
Participants left with newfound confidence in their ability to tell stories visually, as well as practical skills they could apply immediately. The hands-on approach ensured a memorable and enriching experience, celebrating the creative potential of every individual.
This initiative by WO Consultancy demonstrates the power of art and technology to inspire and connect young minds.
