NHS Digital Inclusion Workshops

In April 2023, we successfully launched our NHS Digital Inclusion Workshops, a project aimed at bridging the digital divide and empowering our community to access and utilise NHS digital health assets confidently.

The workshops were held on Monday 24th April at Edmonton Green Library and Friday 28th April at Enfield Town Library. A total of 14 community members, 85% of whom were aged 65 and over, participated in these interactive sessions designed to enhance digital health literacy.

Why This Project?

With the increasing reliance on digital tools in healthcare, many individuals—especially older adults—face barriers to accessing essential services like booking GP appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions, and managing their health records online. Fear of fraud and lack of confidence often prevent people from embracing these valuable tools. This project was developed to address these challenges, making digital healthcare more accessible, safer, and easier to use for everyone in our community.

Workshop Highlights

  • Practical Training: Participants learned how to set up and navigate the NHS App, access their medical records, and order prescriptions online using laptops provided during the session.

  • Expert Insights: Dr. Lopez joined the first workshop, answering questions about data sharing and pharmacy options, and giving a presentation on a walking app that promotes physical activity—a key component of healthy aging.

  • Community Feedback: Attendees expressed enthusiasm, with comments like:

  • • “I learned so much today and feel more confident using technology.”

  • • “It was perfect—I’d love more practical sessions.”

  • • “I would like longer workshops and more handouts!”

Key Takeaways:

  1. Interest and Need: The workshops revealed a significant demand for more sessions, with participants keen to deepen their skills and confidence.

  2. Support Matters: Attendees indicated they’d use digital tools more if there were ongoing support to guide them.

  3. Health Integration: Combining health literacy with physical activity education (like Dr. Lopez’s input) adds immense value for attendees.

What’s Next?

Building on the success of these workshops, we plan to:

  • Offer longer and recurring workshops.

  • Provide detailed handouts and post-session support.

  • Continue inviting healthcare professionals to bridge the gap between digital skills and healthcare knowledge.

Our NHS Digital Inclusion Workshops are just the beginning of creating a more digitally inclusive and health-conscious community. Together, we can ensure everyone benefits from the innovations in digital healthcare.
